The Irrelivance of Blogs (TLDR)

Why am I writing a blog?

Blogs used to be a lot more common, but now they are less so. I imagine people don't want to read blogs anymore because most people today prefer their information in bite-sized, easy to swallow, "fun-size" packets. The following is a hackneyed explanation of what I think is the cause of this.

People want their information like they want their fast food, ready to gorge on and consume quickly. Because of the speed at which information is exponentially increasing, most people don't feel that they want to read anything but "fun sized" bites of information. Granted, a lot of people's learning styles are better at receiving their information in "chunking".

What is chunking? Chunking allows people to more easily retain the information in short-term memory. It also condenses large bits of information condensed into something entertaining, without depth on context. Then news becomes rumor, and  rumor becomes truth.

Fun size chunks of information are also more visually appealing. When's the least time you read a news article without copious use of visuals and videos? It catches the eye, but gives no deeper understanding of the issues and their context. We'll talk more about deeper context and sub narrative later in further blogs.

Also, today, anyone can say whatever they want about anything on a platform, whether it is "true", or misleading, or just inaccurate. Unfortunately, some people will believe anything they read in their enclosed information loop, or information bubble.

De-evolution. I assume that Mark Motherbough from DEVO was a prophet or at the least very insightful. People are willing to give up on their critical thinking in order to be distracted from the true horrors of the world. I think this might have something to do with the difference between pity and compassion. Pity will see a school bombed in Palestine and say, "Aww.. that horrible", and then move on in their feed. Compassion sees the same thing and is filled with the desire to do something about it to alleviate the suffering of these victims. Granted, the average person has NO control over international events. This could be why we don't do anything to alleviate the suffering, because we believe that there is no action we can take to help. We feel helpless, which leads to hopelessness, and we seek to further distract ourselves from the horrors of the world.

Truth is relative, but contextual, and the deeper context cannot be absorbed in fun size bites.

Now's a good time to say that I really don't give a shit about this, for several reasons. One of these reasons is that I have become cynical, bitter, and atrophied from the suffering of the world. I have very little hope for humanity if we continue on the road to stupidity, or de-evolution. A lot of this is due to my depression, anhedonia, and general disinterest in what I believe is a failing species. And the failure will be our fault, for listening to our stories without proper context. The disinterest in the deeper context will eventually lead to people to practice further and further disuse of a deeper human intelligence.

I am doing this for myself. to articulate my thoughts, for self help (because, yes, I still do love myself), and for self analysis, or psychologizing myself, This is an intellectual commodity used less and less today. And I can't blame people for that, because of the cliché rap that psychology gets in the media, tv, and movies. But I, amongst many, still believe in the benefits of therapy and psychology, even considering that we've had, as James Hillman said “... a Hundred Years of Psychotherapy and the World's Getting Worse". (a brilliant Archetypal psychologist - more on his philosophy and psychology in future blogs),  This is because it is up to the patient to do all the work. The therapist is merely a sounding board, an objective (within the parameters of psychology) opinion that can be useful when one is stuck in a knot (or knots) or neurosis and unhealthy complexes.

I hope that you enjoy my take on things, which will include:

  • psychology
  • philosophy
  • religious ideas
  • Atheism
  • Agnosicism (or, more accurately, agnosis)
  • and magick

Magick will be a little tricker, because I both believe and don't believe it "it", and both in separate ways and under specific contexts.

Until next time…
